HOOBS USER INTERFACE
HOOBS has a build in web UI. It can be used to manage, configure and control your smart home. This guide will walk you through the interface.
GENERATE ADMIN ACCOUNT
When you first start HOOBS, you will have to create a password for the main administrator account.
DASHBOARD
The status dashboard gives you some general information about HOOBS. It also has the weather and your favorite accessories.
You can resize and move the tiles as you see fit.
SERVICE MENU
The Service Menu is available on any screen when you are logged in. From this menu you can.
- Start and Stop the bridge service
- Reboot the device
- Access the System information
- Manage your Profile and Log Out
You can also view the HOOBS information by clicking About.
ACCESSORIES
HOOBS allows you to control accessories connected to HOOBS. You do not need to have an iOS device to control accessories.
This screen is seperated by Room. You can click each room to view the accessories in that room.
Unassigned Accessories
Unassigned accessories are accessories that have not yet been added to a room.
To configure the rooms and accessory order, click the Edit Accessories button.
ROOM LAYOUT
The room layout screen is accessed from the accessories screen. This allows you to add, delete, edit and rearrange.
From the room layout you can.
- Add and Remove rooms
- Add and Remove accessories from rooms
- Arange accessories in the rooms
- Change accessory names
- Hide accessories
- Set favorite accessories for the dashboard
You can also hide and remove accessories from this screen. If you wish to add an accessory to the favorites tile. Click the Star in the actions toolbar.
To add an accessory to a room, click the Add Accessories button.
Note. This screen automatically saves as you make changes.
Add Rooms
To add a room, simply click the Add Room button. A blank room will show and be placed at the top of your room list.
Adding Accessories
To add an accessory click the Add Accessories button in any room. A list of accessories will show.
Unassigned and hidden accessories will show first in the list. Then all of the other accessories will show, seperated by room.
Once you are finished selecting accessories, click the Add button on the bottom of the list.
LOG
The log screen show you the current activity on the server. This log only keeps the last 500 messages.
The log can be used to troubleshoot plugins. Typically when you ask for help, people will ask you to post this log.
SYSTEM
The System screen has information about the software and the hardware HOOBS is running on.
From this screen you can.
- Check for HOOBS updates
- Get information about the Operating System
- Keep tabs on the File System and Temperature
- Access the Terminal for advanced operations
Updating HOOBS
This checks NPM for you, and if NPM has a version greater than what you have installed, it will show here.
To upgrade click the Upgrade button.
Note. Upgrading requires sudo. If you are not running HOOBS with the -p flag, or you don’t have sudo setup to not ask for passwords. This will not execute.
Terminal
The terminal is the command line for the device HOOBS is running on. This works on Linux and MacOS.
If you don’t know how to run commands on Linux, you should avoid this screen.
PLUGINS
The HOOBS plugin screen allows you to install, update and remove plugins from the system.
HOOBS supports Homebridge plugins and adds HOOBS plugins too. We also have a HOOBS certified program which verifies that a plugin works and is easy to configure.
Installed Plugins
This is the main view for the plugins. It shows you what plugins are installed on the system.
If a plugin has a newer version published, you will see an Update button.
Certified Plugins
If you are having trouble finding a plugin that works? Browse the plugin catalog. These plugins are all HOOBS Certified.
We include an image typically associated with the plugin. Click the Install button on the Pluginspage. If you already have this plugin installed you will see either an Uninstall or Update button.
Installing a Plugin
To install a plugin simply click on the Install button. This is available in the plugin list or the plugin details screen.
Once a plugin installs, it will show the configuration for that plugin.
We understand, sometimes we can’t certify plugins fast enough. The good news is we support Homebridge plugins too.
You can use the search bar to find plugins that fit your needs. Simply start typing the name of the defice or system you want to add in the search bar.
Trick. If you type
homebridgein the search box, you will get the top 50 plugins sorted by popularity.
CONFIG
HOOBS tries to make configuring as easy as possible. We have developed an interface that helps separate the configuration into easy chunks.
Note. You can change sections without losing your changes. You can make all of your changes in one session. When done click the Save Changes button to apply those changes to the server.
Interface
We start with the Interface settings. From here you can control the look and feel of the user interface.
Bridge Settings
The bridge settings controls the Homebridge service. This is where you can set the bridge name, username and pin code.
Port Ranges
This is part of Homebridge. This section is used to control the range of ports that separate accessories (like a camera or television) should be bound to.
Plugins
Each plugin you install will show in the config. We separate each plugin into it’s own section. This helps with keeping everything straight.
Plugins can contain a configuration schema. This is what we use to make the fields. If your favorite plugin doesn’t have a configuration schema, add an issue on their GitHub repository and direct them to this document.

Plugins that have either a platform.schema.json, accessories.schema.json or a config.schema.json file will show like this.
If the plugin does not define their config settings, they will look like this.
And if it is an accessory type plugin, without a definition file.
Note. If a plugin doesn’t have a configuration definition file, it doesn’t mean the plugin is bad. All it means is the plugin developer hasn’t had time to create one, or doesn’t know about them.
As you can see we have tried to make configuring as easy as possiable. Even with undefined configuration settings, we seperate each plugin and accessory so you can’t screw too much up 🙂
Also we have included validation in the fields, that will highlight errors for you. It will catch things like a missing comma and other syntax errors.
Advanced Editor
The Advanced setion allows you to manually configure HOOBS. This is not recommended, but sometimes it is needed.
Everything can be configured without this screen. But what is cool is, this updates when you change something in other sections.
For example, you add a garage door opener in the Chamberlain plugin section. After you do that you can look at the Advanced section to see what it did.
Backup
This section allows you to download a copy of the configuration and logs. You can also download a complete backup which includes your plugins and accessory cache and layout. Simply click the System button. It is recommended to do this before installing plugins or upgrading the system.
Restore
HOOBS allows you to restore the system using a HOOBS backup file. To restore click the Select Backup button. Then select a backup (.hbf) file. After your system is restored, your device will reboot.
Warning. This will delete your current configuration.
USERACCOUNTS
HOOBS is a multi user system. You can create a user for each member in your household.
This show all of the current users.
Adding Users
To add a user click on the Add User button. Then set a Username, and set the Name. The Namefield is the friendly name.
Then set a Password. Passwords must be at least 5 characters long.
Permissions
HOOBS is also a permissable system. Currently the only permissions HOOBS has is.
- Terminal Access
This gives the user access to the terminal and allows them to install non-certified plugins.
Removing a User
To remove a user, simply click the Delete User button.
Note. Room layouts are unique per user. And their room layout will not affect the other users.
Networking / WiFi
- Simple WiFi setup. If no network is detected HOOBS will create its own WiFi hotspot on compatible devices. Users can connect to the “HOOBS” WiFi Hotspot from their mobile device which will open a captive portal allowing the user to connect the Raspberry Pi to their own WiFi network.
- This hotspot will not launch if the Raspberry Pi is already connected to WiFi or if the device is connected via an ethernet cable.
- Once your Raspberry Pi is connected to the network you can browse to
